Studies on Dormancy of Korean Local Garlics

Abstract
Studies were performed for 42 Korean local garlic strains to obtain basic materials and informations which may be useful for garlic cultivation and storing, by distinguishing Southern and Northern types according to their physiological and ecological characteristics examined.
Period of garlic-bulb differentiation and formation was found to come early in the Southern and late in Northern strains, and that of maturity was likewise early in the Southern and late in Northern strains.
Period of starting growth in sprout leaves during storage, sprouting and rooting under the favorable environments of growth, came early in Southern strains and late in the Northern. Rapidity of sprout growth showed very indicative differences between the two typical strains and was confirmed due to difference in dormant nature, thus lengh of the dormancy for Southern strains is shorter than the Northern ones.
Dormancy-inducing factor was found to be involved in garlic storage leaves, and it determines extent of dormancy between the Southern and Northern types.
Benzyladenine treatment of stored garlics for leaf sprouting was almost without effect on Southern strains, yet there was promotive effect on the Northern in dormancy. This indicated the fact that Northern strains have more dormancy-inducing substance than the Southern having less level of the factor.
The effect of abscisic acid treatment on leaf growth was less striking for the Southern than the other strain. This suggests that more abscisin-like substance acting as a dormancy-induing factor is present in bulbs of the Northern than those of Southern strains.
